It's quite jargon-y for an intro textbook. Take for example, this sentence in Chapter 1: "A key feature of living systems is that they are open systems that function far from thermodynamic equilibrium." They do not explain what an "open system" is, nor do they ever clarify what is meant by "thermodynamic equilibrium". They then proceed to give examples that draw from proteins and nucleic acids, which is covered in Chapter 3. They really could afford to do a better job of explaining concepts. It's fine if you have some background knowledge, but otherwise you're better off consulting one of the many "bio-made-simple"-type websites online.
Book came used, but barely had any marks on it. Pages are all there, used it for BSC1010 and BSC1011 (this semester). No complaints, it lasted for both my classes and it was very affordable, especially when compared to the most recent book which is far too expensive. As far as the material in comparison to the new text book I would be unable to answer that, but it did get me through both classes with an A and my professor never had to specifically say that some things would not be in this book. In fact she recommended to buy this book because according to her it was essentially the same.
This is a Biology book for students and Biologists as well. Notice I didn't say "textbook" because this book is definitely readable front to back. Raven Biology has always been known to be complete and thorough in previous editions and this one is no exception. I have been a Biologist for 34 years and this is one of the Biology books that I seek out for updated editions. I have not been disappointed yet. I highly recommend this book to anyone working in the field of Biology and also to anyone who just has an interest in the study of life and how organisms work.
I received this textbook over a month after I paid for it, which is now in the middle of my college semester. I figured it would be the better option to purchase a *new* version of this book, since I'd probably use it for multiple semesters. The package it was shipped in looks like someone taped a couple pieces of cardboard together around the textbook, it was badly damaged and ripped. The book itself appears fine until I opened it and realized 90% of the pages were covered in a sticky, gross substance. The pages are stuck together and will rip themselves apart if you try to un-stick them, making it impossible to fully read the text in the book. Definitely not worth $160, will be returning and demanding a refund.Pictures show the pages sticking together even when I lift them apart, and the spilled substance covering a good portion of each page.Video is of average quality but still shows how sticky all of these pages are and you can hear them ripping apart from one another.
This is the best college textbook I have read on any subject. I have recently accumulated a bunch of great textbooks on Physics, Chemistry and more specialized subjects. All of these are good. But Biology by Peter Raven is the best!. It is incredibly clear, extremely well-organized, and is just a joy to read. You can almost start any place in the book and understand what the authors are discussing. Every chapter opens up a whole world of biological thought and current biological science.
Even though my course was using a newer edition, this textbook still had the relevant material. I saved so much buying essentially the same book! The chapters were ordered slightly different from the 11th edition, but they were still titled the same, so it really wasn't an issue.
This book is simply the best biology book I have ever read. It simplifies multiple subjects, and honestly I still use the information presented in this text for classes I'm currently taking. If you want to learn some biology easily and quickly this is the text I would advise.
Very large and heavy book, but it will get you through your first year of biology. This book had very detailed and methodical explanations of everything from molecular biology through organismal classification and evolution. It's a jack of all trades, master of none, but it really was useful in cementing lecture materials in my mind.
