I'm quite impressed with how much information is packed into this book despite its size. Contrary to this statement, though, it's not just a book about how disabled people apply for benefits. Thrasher effectively weaves in his own struggles with mentally impairing disorders during the first part of the novel in a way that is easy to understand for someone who has never been in his situation. Unfortunately I've heard too many stories; there is a world of people out there who believe that those applying for disability benefits are cheating the system, trying to take the easy way out, etc., but they don't even know how hard it is to be approved. I didn't know the circumstances myself. Added to that is the veil of mystery surrounding mental disorders--the way they're classified for disabilities is very stringent, as Thrasher details. Sadly, mental illnesses are not understood well enough, and that makes it even more difficult in a system that is so cut and dry with disability claims. With hope, Thrasher's book can shed light on the subject for those that uninformed.
In this concise work, Thrasher uses his own story of applying for disability with the federal government as a template for others to understand the process more easily. Some may benefit by understanding what to expect from the process in their own application. Non-applicants may also gain some compassion as they hear first hand what challenges face the truly disabled as they approach a rigid and often discouraging process.
An interesting read, especially for somebody like me that doesn't know the struggles of having a disability, but wants to sympathize. I can also see it as being helpful to people who struggle, or are afraid to start this process.

This story is about a common man's journey. Quite a detailed account one that could fit so many other's lives. It's quite an eye opener. This book shows us just how inept our government can be. The one thing I kept thinking while reading 'What happened to all of the churches and communities that would have helped better than the government? ', as they have all but disappeared. In the pull away from God and morality we have relied more upon the State and it's power to take care of us instead of helping and relying on our fellow neighbors. I agree wholeheartedly with Ryan, that it's not about the people within the government, but the tremendous power that the government has and fails to achieve with that is the problem. We could be helping one another better if the State allows us more power to be free. This book has inspired me to care and help my brothers everywhere.
