About the Author
Sandra Boynton is a beloved American cartoonist, children’s author, songwriter, and highly sporadic short film director. Boynton has written and illustrated sixty children’s books and seven general audience books, including five New York Times bestsellers. More than 70 million of her books have been sold—“mostly to friends and family,” she says. Boynton has also written and produced six albums of unconventional children’s music; three of her albums have been certified Gold (over 500,000 copies sold), and Philadelphia Chickens, nominated for a Grammy, has gone Platinum (over one million copies sold). Boynton has also written and directed eleven short musical films and two animated shorts, including “Tyrannosaurus Funk,” sung by Samuel L. This is one of the books our 2-year old girls DEMAND we read from time-to-time. It's a simple little song where a mommy dog sings how much she loves her pup, and our girls just love to hear it again and again.We have a ton of Boynton book and our girls keep coming back to this one. If you're looking for a place to start with Boynton this should work.
Truthfully, I bought this book because I thought it was adorable with parent dog hugging its puppy. Unfortunately, my son wasn't all that into it at first... despite him loving dogs. He is more jnterested in Sandra Boynton's other books like Barn Yard Dance or The Going to Bed Book. I finally got him to show more interest in it once I pulled up a YouTube video where they sing this as a song instead. Then, he had me repeat the song over and over again while reading along on the book.
My little one doesn't love all Boyton books, but this one is a real winner! All I have to do is start singing this song and I get a huge smile! I enjoy reading this one as much as he loves to hear it. I bought it for Valentine's Day and it has been a huge hit ever since. We read this one all the time and I would highly recommend it. It has cute pictures and the song totally gets stuck in my head (for better or worse, at least it's a cute song). I checked out the song on youtube before buying the book and you may want to do the same, just to make sure you know what you are getting yourself into :)
Hands-down my personal favorite of all the books I've read to my son - and we have read a lot of books!All the Sandra Boynton books are fun to read, but this one builds in some smooches and snuggles which you just can't beat. At a really young age my son figured out the rhythm and I could pause to watch him lean in expecting a kiss. You just can't get any better than that!I give this and the Belly Button Book at every single baby shower, they're the best!
This is a great book. I received it when my daughter was small. It was one of her favorites. When my niece got pregnant, she wanted to get a copy for her. So it is one that keeps on giving.
Bought this book and 3 other Sandra Boynton books (Are you A Cow?, Hippos Go Berserk, and Doggies) for Christmas gifts for my best friend's 2-year old and my boyfriend's niece who is almost a year old. I think they will be perfect for mom and dad to read to them, and the girls to begin to learn to read as they grow! They are board books-- thick and good quality, that will be easy for tiny hands to hold... or put in their mouth... or whatever... haha. This book is so sweet, and a perfect bedtime read for parents and kids. I almost cried while I was reading through it. I am a dog person, and so are the parents of the girls I got the books for, so I think it will be absolutely wonderful for them, and hopefully create some sweet memories. :)
I work in an early literacy program and we have multiple books of her's that the kids just adore. So, of course when Christmas came around I knew what my 1 1/2 year old nephew would be getting from Aunt Maya. This song book is so precious. I love that you're able to either make up your own song, learn the actual song, or play the YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cht5g_Uw0_Q)! I have yet to meet a child who was not absolutely in love with this bright book! One of my favorite parts of this book is that the words are bright and colorful so children are drawn to them as much as any other picture! I cannot recommend this book enough!
Great book - my daughter is almost 2, and this was in our bedtime book cycle for a while.I like that it can be read as a song, but each person that reads it can chose their own cadence/tone for the song. That is what makes book songs so unique, it is open to the reader how they want to interpret.My daughter enjoyed us reading and singing this to her. Many nights I didn't even use the book, I just rocked her and sang it. As a daddy, I loved this.Highly recommend!
I love books by Boynton and have bought many of them for my son. When I saw the reviews for this book I was very excited to receive it. I personally didn't like this book and for the most part it just sits on the shelf and very rarely gets read. I don't feel like it flows like her other books. Wouldn't recommend.
