Elizabeth Meredith Dowling is a professor of architectural history at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the author of New Classicism: The Rebirth of Traditional Architecture. Marc Appleton is principal of Appleton & Associates Inc. Architects with offices in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, California. His design work has received many awards and been published in Architectural Digest, Town & Country, and other periodicals. He has consistently been named one of Architectural Digest’s Top 100 Designers.

The adjective contemporary has come to imply a valid disconnection from history, as if artifacts could spring from the egos of artists and express something more profound than chronic self absorption. The contemporary work in this book is not of that ilk. It posesses a historical dimension that can only be arrived at through a knowledge and love of the history of building and its full vocabulary. The artistic and architectural dogmas bequeathed us by the Twentieth Century are no longer truly contemporary. They are expressions of an age that looks increasingly gimmick ridden and lost as it sinks into its historical context. The buildings in this monograph are beautiful places to live and a guide to the truly contemporary point of view that created them.
This is a beautiful book and it's well put together with striking full color photos and watercolor renderings of each home. It has a timeline of when each home was built, photos of interior as well as exterior and a few views from above. This will be a fantastic read for those who like to see and visualize what they read from the nice photos. This is a must have book for those who like residential architecture with a southwestern flare.
And that is... the the first home that Michael Imber built when he returned to San Antonio.....His parents home, in Canyon Lake.A vernacular design.. much like the Butcher Ranch yet simpler...much simpler, yet with the Imber designs through and through.The second owner...me... has continued in the Imber tradition with the addition of a garage and extensive landscaping that gives the appearance that everything was done at the same time...back in 1992.
I'm so glad I got this book. Even though some of the projects are up to 20 years old, they still look fresh and right. The book has some beautiful renderings and watercolor images of the various homes mostly in the front of the book. There are also floor plans to help orient yourself with all the pictures. All in all a really nice book full of traditional styled Architecture of mostly Spanish Haciendas, Italian Villas, Texas country ranches, and stone and rock houses.
I love the architectural design and style of Michael Imber.The flow of the book is very good. The book is large with great pictures, although I wouldn't mind even more pictures of his work. I immensely enjoyed how the book went into the history (Texas) of some early historic properties around the State and the people that had influence on his style.A must have book for those who love the rich southwestern or Mexican ranch architectural style.
Beautiful book with great architecture, beautiful photographs, drawings and water colors! Texas vernacular mixed with classic underpinnings. If you haven't heard of Michael Imber, I recommend you check out his architecture.
