About the Author

Deanna Adler was born in 1941 to Norman and Lillie Scheiner. She lost most of her family to the holocaust in Poland. After an abusive marriage, Deanna moved from Cleveland to LA where she raised three sons with her second husband Mel. For the last thirty years, Deanna has campaigned against drug abuse appearing on Dr. Drew's celebrity rehab, and writing "Ask Deanna" columns in Kerrang! and One Life magazines where she gave honest, hard-earned advice to teenagers on three continents. This book is very well-written by the same author of Steven Adler’s autobiography and I would totally recommend it to anyone who likes interesting stories of musicians and/or addiction. I’m not even a fan of Guns & Roses or Axl Rose and still enjoyed it, but I must say I had a good laugh at the mother’s biased claim that they were the “greatest rock and roll band of their time.”The bummer is that all throughout the book the mother portrays herself as some kind of martyr and the self pitying gets a bit much. In the last 50 pages she’s finally given leeway to put her own voice in to relate her life story and that’s where you really see the bitterness and resentment towards Steven come out. Since you also find out that Steven voluntarily and totally financially supported her for over 15 years, she seems to feel it was something she was entitled to and was angry when she was cut off.To her credit, she does admit she was an enabler but that is an understatement. There is usually a whole lot of guilt behind any parent enabling a child to this extent, but there never is any owning up to her having played any part in the “monster” that was created. I would have liked to have seen more honesty and insight into herself and her life. Instead, she uses her other 2 sons as shining examples of what a great mother she was and then the excuse of having had a horrible mother herself. But overall it was Steven’s own brothers, not her, who were instrumental in getting him into rehabs and staging interventions. It’s clear that Steven’s upbringing was very different from his brothers, as he was an unwanted baby during the pregnancy, then dumped off with the grandmother as a very young child and then later on kicked out of the mother’s house as a teenager. That makes 3 rejections in his mind, but she doesn’t see herself having played any role in contributing to his proclivity to addiction or intense long-term anger towards her. It’s true, as she says, that Steven is very likeable (as seen on the Celebrity Rehab series) but you certainly don’t like him very much in the stories she’s chosen to share. But then she played a large part in how he turned out.Note: You will be flabbergasted at the actual list of pain pills and drugs that the “rehab” doctor gave Steven which he was billed thousands of dollars for, and wonder why this poor excuse for a medical professional isn’t serving time in jail for fraud, narcotic drug pushing and attempted murder (not coincidentally the same scam “treatment” doctor that Prince was getting ready to hook up with a couple decades later, which is also mentioned in the book).

My review is not about the content of the book, although it is extremely heavy and manipulative, but the story is interesting nevertheless. I grew up, like many, being a huge fan of GnR. But this book has issues, physical issues. First of all, in most pages they ran low on ink, so it's badly printed. Then, the pages started to fall off, and I have only started reading, not carrying it anywhere, not bending or throwing it around (although most of my books I am able to put down while they're open with the pages facing down that they will not shatter all over). Bad, bad quality!!

I loved it!!! I really am a fan of Steven Adler so to read about him from his mothers point of raising him and suffering thru some really hard times was very interesting sad absorbing and ultimately rewarding as the book clearly tells! 5stars to Deanna Adler and thanks for giving us a great drummer in your son Steven! I love him even after reading your book!!!!! He was so bad!

It was a sad tale of drugs and tearing a family to pieces. It really makes you stop and think how you shouldn't take life for granted because things could change in the wink of an eye. I definitely enjoyed the liked the stories about the band and rock and roll. The only thing I didn't like was sometimes it felt like the author was wrapped up in self pity and was rambling on so that some events in book seemed out of place.

God bless this woman is all I can say! The book was good, there were some issues I had with some things that were kind of repetitive and hard to follow, but overall it was a well-written book. And how can you not give good reviews to a person who bares their soul? I do so hope Mrs. Adler is able to live the rest of her life with peace, because Lord knows, she deserves it!

No wonder Steven Adler is such a mess. This woman has done nothing more than assembled a fictional account of her life and the life of her son. It is very interesting just how much venom towards her own son she spews in the last 10 chapters of the book which is basically when the author allows her to actually put her own words down on paper! Her views on Dr. Drew Pinsky, Celebrity Rehab, VH-1, Sober House and even Rodney King are almost laughable. She contradicts herself sometimes within the same paragraph, and when she isn't taking passive aggressive shots at everyone else (Axl, Duff, Izzy and Slash are mentioned almost as much as her own son) she is setting herself up to be a martyr. Sorry lady but you were a woman who made mistakes, all but admitted you did not want your middle child and blame everyone else for him not living with you most of his childhood. When she still defends putting her 10 year old sons belongings on a sidewalk signaling that he is no longer welcome to live with her and her new family it becomes evident this woman actually buys into her own propaganda, but hey whatever helps you sleep at night lady. Save your money, or purchase Appetite For Destruction by Steven Adler.

This book was hard to put down. I read the majority of it in one night. My heart ached for both Steven, his mother, and family. He would have never survived without his mother and family. After what I believe was to be 17 re-hab centers a stroke, broke financially, and mentally his family was still there for him praying that each episode was his last. Two decades of living hell and Steven is a survivor...not many can say that. "The best is yet to come"...I sure hope so for Steven Adler no matter what profession he chooses. I pray he will remain sober and live to share his gift with others...may you never miss a "beat" again Steven

It's such a unique perspective of GNR and Adler's downward spiral. You get a glimpse into a world all GNR fanatics are dying to know❤
