Rita George-Tvrtkovic , PhD, is associate professor of theology at Benedictine University in Illinois. She is the author of A Christian Pilgrim in Medieval Iraq: Riccoldo da Montecroce's Encounter with Islam and coedited Nicholas of Cusa and Islam: Polemic and Dialogue in the Middle Ages. She is also the former associate director of the Archdiocese of Chicago s Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs.

A fine analysis of moments in the history of Marian devotion and their relationship to Christian-Muslim relations throughout time. George-Tvrtkovic has done a great job of delineating differences between each religion's depiction of Mary, in Bible, Qur'an, and larger tradition, and of noting the different views of Mary within each religion as well. Yes, she is a practicing Christian and wants to promote Muslim-Christian relationship -- but this is also a serious work of scholarship!
Scholarly, yet readable by the non-specialist, this book provides an interesting window into both Christian and Muslim attitudes toward the mother of Jesus and her role in Christian-Muslim relations in various times and places. I'll be assigning it to my graduate students. It would be great for a book club discussion as well.
For me, this thorough, thoughtful, and timely scholarly historical survey and analysis of the role of Jesus’ mother in Christianity and Islam highlighted three points. One, while Mary (Maryam) is the •only• woman mentioned in the entire (!) Qur’an, an entire chapter is named after her. Mary (Maryam) is not only not just a Christian figure, but more is said about Mary in the Qur’an than in the Bible. Two, Islamic men and women have for centuries have visited Marianic shrines for prayer despite arguably violating Islamic tenets by doing so. Practical, workaday life needs transcend the need for strict adherence to religious tenets. Three, inter-religious dialogue can promote intra-religious dialogue. A key example being that if Christians of various traditions continually interrelate and speak with Muslims of various traditions, each not only will understand the history and present of the other more fully, but that factions on each side will be more likely to see similarities amongst themselves. Broadly stated? Probably. But if one reads •any• book in order to enhance one’s place in and understanding of the world, George-Tvrtkovic’s succeeded very well with me. Thank you!
Dr. Tvrtkovic shows her extensive knowledge in a way a helps bridge Christian- Muslim relations today by discussing history and the significance of imagery in the past. Wonderful book for the lay person.

This book offers a historical overview of Mary in Christian-Muslim relations to scholars and lay people alike. One of its more interesting aspects is its analysis of Marian art in the Spanish Cantigas de Santa Maria and a Mughal Life of Christ.
This is a really excellent book, which looks at the role that Mary has played in the encounter between Christians and Muslims. Although written by a distinguished scholar, it is a book that is accessible to the ordinary reader who wants to understand more about, well, Christians, Muslims, and Mary.
Tvrtkovic provides her readers with a thorough examination of the Virgin Mary's role in Christianity and Islam throughout history. This book is accessible to those new to Marian studies in Christianity and Islam, but it's extensive bibliography makes it an invaluable resource for those actively engaged in Marian research. Come for an excellent and thought-provoking exploration of how Christianity used Mary as a bridge or barrier, and stay for Tvrtkovic's poignant reflections on the need for continued Marian interreligious and intrareligious engagement today.
