About the Author

Don Freeman was born in San Diego, California, in 1908. At an early age, he received a trumpet as a gift from his father. He practiced obsessively and eventually joined a California dance band. After graduating from high school, he ventured to New York City to study art under the tutelage of Joan Sloan and Harry Wickey at the Art Students' League. He managed to support himself throughout his schooling by playing his trumpet evenings, in nightclubs and at weddings.Gradually, he eased into making a living sketching impressions of Broadway shows for The New York Times and The Herald Tribune. This shift was helped along, in no small part, by a rather heartbreaking incident: he lost his trumpet. One evening, he was so engrossed in sketching people on the subway, he simply forgot it was sitting on the seat beside him. This new career turned out to be a near-perfect fit for Don, though, as he had always loved the theater. He was introduced to the world of children’s literature when William Saroyan asked him to illustrate several books. Soon after, he began to write and illustrate his own books, a career he settled into comfortably and happily. Through his writing, he was able to create his own theater: "I love the flow of turning the pages, the suspense of what's next. Ideas just come at me and after me. It's all so natural. I work all the time, long into the night, and it's such a pleasure. I don't know when the time ends. I've never been happier in my life!"Don died in 1978, after a long and successful career. He created many beloved characters in his lifetime, perhaps the most beloved among them a stuffed, overall-wearing bear named Corduroy.Don Freeman was the author and illustrator of many popular books for children, including Corduroy, A Pocket for Corduroy, and the Caldecott Honor Book Fly High, Fly Low.

This was my son's favorite book when he was little (40 years ago). I ordered a copy to give someone as a baby gift, but the inside cover has the following text on it:“A winning, completely childlike picture book in which a stuffed bear waiting hopefully in a toy department finds a home with a little black girl who wants Corduroy so much that, when her mother refuses to buy him, she come back the next day with her own money. Endearing, brightly colored pictures together with the text affectionately recount Corduroy’s adventures”-BooklistIf they have to have a precis of the book, I wish they could have just said, "stuffed bear loses a button but finds a friend". The child's race is irrelevant to the story.

This is a book that all children will love. Ages 2-4. Read it to my daughter years ago. She borrowed it from the library because we could not find our old copy. Grandchild did not want to take back. Today during a melt down, she wanted it again. After quietly talking through the story & calming down, I downloaded it to my Kindle Fire. She enjoyed turning the pages & knew the story. Mayday on screen talked me through magnifying the pages & text which is different from adult books. I recommend both formats - tablet & hard copy. Also as retired librarian this book will be on every best-loved list.

Such a sweet little story, and one to get little one's imaginations running wild. I bought this for our little one's growing library, even though he's not here yet. I read it yesterday and was not disappointed at all like I have been with some other baby/small children's books I've ordered online. I will be very happy to read this to our son again and again as he so chooses.

This was a favorite book of mine growing up and I lost it to Hurricane Katrina. Now that I've had my first child I was really happy to replace my copy for my son. He is only 9 months so although we have story time every day, this book is still a little too much to keep his attention. One of my favorite things about this book, though, are the illustrations. My son does seem to enjoy that for the moment he's engaged, haha.I bought a used copy and it came as promised in 'very good' condition. I also feel the price was fair. I did have to wait almost two weeks (if I remember correctly) for it to be delivered but that was no problem.

I loved this book as a kid and now I get to share it with my son. My son fell in love with this book so much that I ended up buying him his own corduroy bear and he takes it EVERYWHERE we go. I even went ahead and bought the other corduroy books for him because he loves it so much! I’m happy that I get to share such a fun book from my childhood with my son.

Love this book! It was my favorite childhood book and recently bought for cousin's child. It a sweet story that talks about a stuffed, alive bear that no one wants and then he finds a home willing to accept his imperfection.

My two-year-old is obsessed with this book, to the point where I have it memorized and the book is all bent up. It's a simple story of a bear trying to find his lost button in the department store, before being adopted by a little girl who says she "like(s) you just the way you are." Any kid who has a bear of their own will understand the bond the bear and the girl form, and it's a very heartwarming ending. The pictures are gorgeous, and capture kids' attention well. I just wish it came in hardback, because at this rate, I'm going to have to buy another copy for my second child to enjoy after her sister has loved this copy to death.

Bought this for a baby shower present and the envelope didn't say "DO NOT BEND" on it. So my mailman crammed it into a mailbox with a bunch of other mail. It looks like crap and is bent in multiple places. Tomorrow is the party. Now I will have to run out and buy something before a 10am start time.
