For some of the photos, like on the cover and the first two pages, there isn't info about where the museums are or what they're called. It's a quirky book, which is a plus. (I was hoping for art and history museums.)
I love it.
This is much more of a bathroom read book than a real book about unusual museums. Each museum is given a URL, one photo (as often from the outside as the inside) and the equivalent of about a paragraph of description. It's fun to leaf through but given how short it is, not that useful for anybody looking for more than that. If you do want more information on immense or just unusual museums,Atlas Obscura: An Explorer's Guide to the World's Hidden Wonders is by far a better choice. So if you've got Kindle Unlimited, go ahead and enjoy, but if you're looking to buy something or want a real guide, Atlas Obscura is the way to go.
was a fun, interesting, and at times thought provoking read. Most of the museuems are ones that aren't commonly discussed. The entries are just long enough to encourage interest in the museums. The writing tone is conversational like talking with a friend: informal language, encouragement to try something new, a few jokes. (Though I don't agree with everything they say especially since some of the museums are too creepy for me.) The entries generally left me feeling one of several reactions.Wanting to visit: the Erawan Museum in Thailand is a three headed gigantic elephant statue filled with artwork about mythological creatures. It would be amazing just to see just the outside in person.Wanting to see at least part in person: Churchill's War Rooms at the Imperial Museum. Would echoes from all the momentous decisions linger?Wanting to research something about the place: Goethe 's titles of writer, scientist, and statesman made me realize I don't know much about him. As the book says, someone who can suceed at so many different roles must be incredible.Thoughtful about some aspect of human experience: I've heard of individual mountains but not a unified look at them in myth and legend like the Messner Mountain Museum does.This book is a good choice for an armchair traveler wanting to get a peek at some of the interesting museums the world has.
I love museums and this has one of my two favorites, that being the Musical Instrument Museum in Scottsdale. Absolutely a must see if you’re in the area. Lots of stuff in this book is overseas. Probably should be a version for each continent.
Each museum page does have a website link. I really thought there would be more pictures though. It leaves me rather undecided as to which of these would be worth the trip. Except the Smithsonian. There is something sure to interest everyone there.
We enjoy traveling and planning before we head off to our destination. This book has given us some fun starting points for potential future worldwide locations! Would have been fun to do the research for this book!
