Review

"One of the most affecting [books] I have read on the subject of Israel and Palestine....His story is important not only for its message of peace, but for the fact that it personalizes the Palestinian experience." ― Globe and Mail (Toronto)"Scrupulously honest... heartfelt, moving and beautifully written in a distinctive voice.... what is most remarkable is that [Abuelaish] is able to convey not only a baseline faith in the human spirit, but hope for the future." ― Dallas Morning News

I Shall Not HateBy Izzeldin AbuelaishThis book is at the same time an autobiography that parallels the Bible’s Job and the Quran’s أيّوب Ayyūb‎. It provides a working and modern day lessons that appears by all events in desperate need to finally be learnt. To me a western reader that collects his information from a western press finds a paradigm shifting dose of reality in this story by Izzeldin Abuelaish. I’ve actually gleaned a subtle shift in other books: Son of Hamas, Birds Without Wings, and the Israel Test come to mind. The paradigm shift in those books was not as profoundly portrayed as in this book. The shift is simple: Co-existence at grass-roots level. Izzeldin’s message is proposed against very staunch realities. The story will climax with the reader having no choice but to face those realities as a citizen of humanity. In reading the book I found myself fact checking on the internet to give a higher sense of the nuance of the cause of the problems in Israeli-Palestinian solution it’s helpful for the reader to have a glimpse of the timeline of events leading up to Izzeldin’s story. I have one word for this Borders.First was a clumsy affair led by once again the British and the French with Americans once again drawn in to the fray. First is the 1916 Sykes Picot Agreement. From that Agreement between the French and the British drew up the below map that was presented by TE Lawrence to the Eastern Committee of the War Cabinet in November 1918. Notice how much of Palestine territory of that time crosses over in to Syria, Egypt, and Arabia for which a portion evolved to what is now called Jordon. Have you ever wondered why you hear that the Palestinians were abandoned by her neighbors?Izzeldin moved me in a way that I have not been moved before. His story is tragic. The systematic oppression by Israelis, the violent death of his daughters at the hands of the Israeli army did not impede his ability to love his neighbor. His simple solution....coexist. To read my in depth review that puts his story in a larger context with ample footnote, reference my blog. key word cigarroomofbooks and go to May 2016. There you will find this review and a few pertinent book reviews. Test your objectivity.

'They shelled my house. They killed my daughters. What have we done?' These words rang out from Izzeldin Abuelaish shortly after he found his daughters killed by Israeli bombs. Years later, he was asked by a member of the audience when he spoke at a Synagogue, 'What have you personally taught your children about Jews and the Jewish people?' Izzeldin asked Raffah, a surviving daughter, to join him on stage and asked her to answer the unplanned episode. Raffah replied in Hebrew, 'I love you'.One can talk at length about the theories and philosophies of forgiveness, but when events such as that endured by Izzeldin and his family, where do those theories go? This book is probably the best lesson on kindness and forgiveness. It is also a reflection of what evil war can make humans turn inhumane.

Israel is a wonderful country with wonderful people that has made many contributions to civilization. Sadly it is now under control of an imperialistic regime that is taking actions in Palestine that are in violation of International Law. This book does a masterful job of exposing such actions and exemplifies a solution through love and non-violent resistance.

Shortly after the siege on Gaza ended and the world learned the tragedy of this Palestinian physician who works in an Israeli hospital, as an Arab who strongly believes in peace and the two state solution, as a person who believes that Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side with dignity, respect and equality. I got approached by others who do not share the same ideas telling me "in your face! see how Israelis treat Arabs, they shell their houses and kill their families". Reading the doctor's accounts of his own life in Gaza and hearing him recite his unfathomable tragedy and yet despite being angry at his loss he still believes that more war will lead to more loss and that revenge or callas for it will not bring his daughter's back. This book reaffirmed my faith in humanity and that despite all our tragedies the love and respect for your fellow human is what needs to prevail if we are to continue to evolve and conquer our challenges.READ THIS BOOK

Depressing but the author’s reality was depressing! Inspiring because he took the worst lemons ever and made lemonade out of them, as best as he could. The author has a sincere desire to have world peace, and I found that heartwarming.

I found the book amazing. This man had everything against him, but made it anyway. After all he had been through, it amazing that he was open to friendship with Israelis. Most people wouldn't have continued this openness after experiencing the humiliations and harassment that he did just to work in their hospitals or to visit his dying wife. Even though he was working with the Israelis, treating Israelis citizens and a trusted physician, they still targeted his home in Gaza. If there were more people like him among the Palestinians and the Israelis, they might resolve the conflict. Hopefully his example influence those who think that the only way to accomplish anything is to continue the violence.

I have not finished the book, but so far love everything about it. It is intelligently, truthfully and sensitively written. I heard about this author at about the time that this tragedy happened to his family over ten years ago. I had read about his story, but unfortunately had forgotten his name. When I finally found it and realized he had written this book, I immediately ordered it. I may just get an extra copy to lend to friends.

When the journey into this book began, I thought I knew what was going on, who to support, and why war was necessary. Then, I delved into pages of loss, but not despair. Pages of oppression, but not hate. There is hope at the end of this book and I want to embody the ideology this author, Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, has for all of us as well as himself.
