Review
“A hundred years on . . . Dubliners has been absorbed into our literary landscape, but in the early part of the twentieth century it was the sort of book that hadn’t been seen much before, certainly from an Irish writer, and much of it shocked the conventional literary world. . . . [Joyce] was taking the lived landscape of his childhood and transforming it into something universal. . . . The stories contain some of the most beautiful sentences ever written in English.” —Colum McCann, from the Foreword“A handsome deluxe edition.” —The New York Times“A gorgeous new trade paperback edition [of] arguably the most important single-author short story collection in the English language.” —KQED, “Great Lit Perfect for Summer Reading”

The book feels at once good to hand. And when was the last time we could have the thrill of deckle edges on a paperback? This is a book to love for itself even before you open to its smooth and cool buff pages. Muradov's covers are close to perfect. Crisp and modern while echoing the early 20th century in line and style, they illuminate the text both subtly and overtly, depending on where one is gazing. If, like me, you sometimes envy those Hunter MFA students of McCann, you will enjoy his foreward. Getting this whiff of his exposition style is just fun. You will recognize again and savor his care of sentence and description as well as his ever lovely quixotic connections that so enliven his novels. All this and Joyce too. Almost too much. I replace my battered second hand copy because I wanted the McCann foreward. What? You're still reading? Away with you to order this book.
There is no finer collection of short stories than this, and there is no finer use of the English language. A great introduction to the genius, James Joyce.
Look at this beautiful new cover for Dubliners! Found this in Classic Penguin Cover.
Beautiful, readable edition, worthy of this classic. The book design, the type face, and even the paper were all first rate.
It's a beautiful edition, and I'm thrilled to have it. Delighted with the notes.
A beautiful volume with a terrific introduction!
Joyce was one of the inventors of the modern short story. Don't expect a beginning, a middle and an end. The stories describe the life of the poor and the lower middle class people in Dublin at the end of the 1800s. People are living of expedients, are not well educated, and they make use of Catholicism sometimes to delude themselves and at other times to control other people. The Penguin Edition has excellent notes, and these stories without notes would be impossible to understand: they refer to Irish customs, legends, obscure Catholic rites, Gaelic words, specific shops and street in Dublin, etc. The pages of the book are cut unevenly, to make it look like a "vintage book" but it is very impractical: it makes it impossible to flip through the pages.
Love this book!!
