I am not sure I can be more pleased with my decision to read Bocas. It is a fun, well-paced novel set in Bocas del Toro, a province of Panama, which must be beautiful. Read it and be prepared to recommend it to the next adult asking: "What book should I read during my beach/pool/jungle vacation?"
I really enjoyed this book. The first-person narrative was a bit tough to follow for the first few pages, then the flow really clicked from there. Through the voice of the main character, George, the story presents a mix of hilarity, suspense, tragedy and resilience. Notably, I found myself laughing out loud several times while reading it on my daily BART commute (which drew some strange looks from my fellow passengers). I was bummed when the book came to an end -- I want to see where George’s life takes him next -- and I miss PJ's accent. I look forward to additional works from this author.
Ok, so I have to admit, Bocas was a great read, start to finish. Fantastic character development and a dialogue style that while at first took some getting used to, once I got into it not only did it work but it felt right.This ride through a Panamanian island called Bocas was fresh and engaging. The characters were sharp and real and the story flowed really well, even through the end where it could have come off as contrived, the author stuck the landing. Well done and a must read! I look forward to Georgie's next adventure.
I typically read multiple books at once, tiring of one or the other and then moving back and forth again over the course of a few weeks. I picked up Bocas last night at 10pm, slept a solid 9 hours and finished the book in my second sitting by 4pm. Eagerly awaiting the sequel.
Highly recommended purchase if you want a page-turning, enjoyable read. Clever and witty first person narrative that is engaging from start to finish. Great beach, summer, before bed (really anytime) read. Fun mix of adventure, modern romance, life, and humor in a tropical setting. You'll want to be best friends with George (the main character) by the end of book (if not a chapter in). Hope the author is working on the sequel - looking forward to the continuation of George's adventures!
Got the book per a friend's suggestion and fell in love with it. I read it during my previous Cabo trip: laying on the pool, drinking margaritas and crazy monkeys, reading the book... were heaven. The book was super easy to read and it was interesting. It's a mix of romance, love, adventure, friendship and life. The "racy" parts of the book describe perfectly the raw physical and emotional aspects that most humans need and want!Can't wait to enjoy the author's next book...Highly suggested!
This was a fun read, but left me wanting a lot more. Hopefully more is on the way! Great characters.
The story pulls you in so fast and keeps you wondering the whole time. I laughed, cried and got sucked into the intensity of all the relationships he was juggling. I would definitely read another book from this author and I would love to find out if there is life after Bocas.
