About the Author

Alfred Wertheimer was born in Germany in 1930, came to America and settled in Brooklyn as a young boy. He took an early interest in architecture and design, which led him to Cooper Union, from which he graduated in 1951. In the spring of 1956, a series of commercial assignments for RCA Records led to a shoot of a newly signed singer named Elvis Presley. Instantly impressed, Wertheimer devoted four months of his own time to intensely shadow the young star. The result would be the most intimate and candid look at the future legend ever recorded. Peter Guralnick is an award-winning biographer of Elvis Presley and author of Last Train to Memphis and Careless Love. A music critic, screenwriter, and historian of American popular music, he is also the author of Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke.

This is a must have! Mr Wertheimer is and was a genius with a camera and caught one of the most charismatic men ever at his most comfortable. If only he could have spent years documenting Elvis's career instead of 2 weeks, oh the history in pictures we would have! Thank you sir for sharing these 2 weeks of an early rise with us!

I have a few books with similar pictures by Alfred Wertheimer but this one has the the double spreads too.. Just beautiful! I dont know if Elvis was the perfect subject or if Mr Wertheimer is an astonishing photographer.. Combined they are quite a force.. and this book is a treat.

There is something all so very divine about this episode of photographs in the life of the world’s soon to be King caught through the eye of Mr Wertheimer. The text, however, I don’t feel fully grasps the magnitude of this notion. Never the less these collections are possibly the most authentic glimpse in to the legend before the world’s spotlight would find him. This truly moved my mother, for whom this was the perfect birthday gift.

Good reading

Stunning, so very special. Love it and recommend to all.

Love the book, all of Alfred Wertheimer's photographs are just beautiful. What a privledge it must have been to follow Elvis and be able to get such great pictures. It is a beautiful book.

This is basically a book of photographs, so there isn't a lot to say about it. However, it is interesting to read Mr. Wertheimer's recollections of Elvis, before he was Elvis. At the time these photos were taken, he was a young 21-year-old man, who had no idea of the fame that lay in front of him. He was probably one of the most beautiful men I've ever seen, and these photos are raw, heartfelt and exquisite; showing Elvis at his most vulnerable. They show Elvis at one of his first television appearances, in a recording studio, at a concert, and at home in Tupelo. They show a young man who wants to be somebody, who stops and talks to people, always signing autographs and listening to them. A man who was attracted to and attractive to women, who loved his family and enjoyed being with them. The photos of Elvis at home are particularly telling; they show him at his most relaxed, with family and friends surrounding him, and the gentle, courteous young man who was nice to everyone and didn't mind sharing his life. You can see in these photos the elemental soul of Elvis; watching him sleep, eat and read. This is the Elvis who was; the Elvis before stardom hit and everything changed. The photographs are nothing if not incredible; for anyone who has ever listened to Elvis, ever watched one of his films, ever heard him speak - these will make you fall in love with him all over again. He was indeed remarkable and there will never be another like him. Highly recommended.

This book came about because the label, RCA, had nothing and wanted candid pictures of Elvis for their own internal use. At the time no real pro had been allowed to take quality pics of Presley. Prior to this only one time grabs from fans and local media were around. These pics would have never been taken had RCA no demanded them as part of their contract with him. They were to be used for publicity, issued to fan mags and also held back for possible exploitation on future albums. However, Col Parker protested the session so much that he almost had to be sedated to travel along with the cameraman. He was pissing a Russian Infantry column, complaining as making never ending demands. He even told RCA he'd sue them if the pics weren't to his liking. At the time, no one really understood why he was so honked off. As we all know now, Parker was planning another one of his 'side jobs' by controlling who could take pics of Elvis. Parker hatched a plan where one of his staff would take pictures of Elvis and only those pics could be officially used in any capacity. RCA soon found out what Parker had in mind when he stuck a 'creative control' rider in their contract: that meant he had that control and that control referred to his monoply on Elvis' pcitures. When it came to develop cover art for Presley's albumns, guess who provided the pics for those covers?. Parker. Only his pics graced the covers of any Elvis albumn. As a result, Parker raked in what Elvis staffer Marty Lacker estimated to be around $1,500,000 for the pics over the next 20 years or so. That money went right into Parker's expanding pockets. At times, he showed his well known cheapness by stiffing the cameramen he hired to take the pics. What'a guy!.Had Parker not been in 'creative control' the world would have had many quality pictures of Elvis. Instead, they had to settle for what the Colonel would sell them.
