Firstly, I took into account CONTENT and QUALITY of this edition in my review. Content: 4 stars. Quality of the edition: zero stars (worse than "I hate it"), giving an average of two stars. I also owe the magnificent second edition by Addison-Wesley, of a great work by Goldstein.ABOUT CONTENT: compared to the second edition, the third edition added about one section per chapter, but not all chapters were added sections. Chapter seven on the special theory of relativity has the most sections added to it (about three). Several appendices of the second edition disappeared in the third edition and it is not clear to me if they were added to the main body of the book. The third edition has a new chapter titled "Classical Chaos," chapter eleven, which could have been better. Chapter eleven, I think, could have done a better job motivating and exploiting Poincaré maps, or first-return maps. Instead, the chapter draws too much attention to the logistic map, which makes that part of the book seem detached from the rest of the book (which is on Mechanics, therefore, differential equations -not maps). Also, the contents of chapter eleven are better presented in other books, such as "Chaos" by Alliwood, Sauer and Yorke, or "Copying with chaos" by Ott, Sauer and Yorke. Interested buyers can see the contents of both books themselves in Amazon.ABOUT EDITION: International Indian editions are H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E, they do a disservice to the works they intend to reproduce with their see-through, wrinkled paper with sloppily framed text in varying hues of gray. A student interested in this classic textbook may try to buy a used (so you can save a bit) hardcover third edition from a reputable seller. But please, and especially if you are a Physics or Mathematics major, PLEASE, DO NOT BUY INTERNATIONAL INDIAN EDITIONS of ANY of your textbooks. They are AWFUL. To top all that, this international Indian edition has the following legend:"The publishers would like to thank [...] for his valuable suggestions and inputs in enhancing the content of this book to suit the requirements of Indian and other Asian universities."I really disliked seeing the above. Does that mean that this edition does not have the same content as the American edition? I want to buy a book as the authors intended it to be, not as some bureaucrat thought that it should be. Unfortunately, when you click on "see inside" in the American edition of the book, it will show the contents of the infamous international edition. This book is great for learning the topic for the first time, and even better once you're looking for a good reference at a later time. It goes very deeply into the physics and philosophy of classical mechanics. The only background needed is vector calculus. The rest should flow naturally. If you don't understand everything on the first read, as some reviewers mentioned, this is not really a problem. This often happens with advanced textbooks, the authors know so much that they can't help but write discussions that are of a more general nature. In the case of Goldstein, you should be able to keep on reading without getting lost. This book is amazing, it covers point-particle physics up to continuum mechanics, and builds everything up to a point where you can go on a and study relativity and quantum mechanics with good confidence.I would give this book 6 stars if I could. However, the 3rd edition has turned what used to be an excellent book into some kind of butchery and orgy or less relevant topics. For example, very few people doing research actually care about chaos theory, aside from its coolness. While I learned this stuff from a mathematically rigorous standpoint decades ago, I never got to use it since then. Also I find it difficult to discuss chaos theory when stochastic processes are ignored. When doing experiments, you always deal with noise which will actually bury a lot of the interesting dynamics. I really don't see the point of altering Goldstein to cover chaos theory when several excellent textbooks on the topic already exist (Arnold, Devaney, Scheinermann).I bought the 3rd edition without knowing about its new slant. At the very least, they should have kept what was in the 2nd edition. Instead, they deleted entire sections which I used to love, such as the derivation of the Lagrangian density for an acoustic field (Appendix E). It's totally gone! I am no longer using the 3rd edition copy, and would consider selling it or getting rid of it. I am much better off with my 2nd edition copy.
